Shooting Touch & Survivors Fund
Shooting Touch is a non-profit that focuses on sports for development in Rwanda, and specialize in basketball. I found it quite inspiring how Dewey (representative from the organization) was playing a part in the development of the Rwandan community through a fellowship. This is definitely something I would be interested in as I believe it would be a beautiful life experience to work and become part of a community for a few months that forces me to get out of my comfort zone.
I was quite astonished to know that playing basketball could have such a deep impact on the mindset of people, capable of challenging the gender norms. Another thing I really like is that the organization is not furthering their own people and agenda, rather they are empowering Rwandans by having 16 Rwandan coaches to avoid Western influence and make sure that the initiatives can continue even if the organization ceases to function.
SURF was also a touching experience, but completely opposite to Shooting Touch as they get involved starting from the foundations of the society. I found Sam (Chief Executive Officer, SURF) to be a very knowledgeable and personable guy who was open to possibilities and honestly tries his best to help the genocide survivors. They microfinance institutions and over time have helped 1000+ beneficiaries along with offering legal support as well.
Sam discussed how he is supporting the victims of rape during the genocide and several cases of sexual violence. One thing that Sam said was really insightful was that women get less passionate as they age to fight their rape cases. Many of these women now choose to live single as they refuse to marry because of their experiences.
